Benue Court Remands Man Over Alleged Poisoning That Killed Two Children

A Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi has remanded Utim Ukerchia in a correctional centre over the alleged poisoning of children in Daudu, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. Police charged him with culpable homicide and terrorism-related offences. The court did not take his plea because it lacks jurisdiction and directed the police to send the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice. Police alleged that he poisoned garri on May 13 and gave it to a four-year-old girl, who shared it with her siblings and six other children. The children reportedly fell ill and were taken to hospital, where two later died. The matter was adjourned until October 2 for further mention as investigations continue. The allegations have not yet been proven in court.
