ICPC Uncovers Official Who Allegedly Put 14 Relatives on Government Payroll

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission says it uncovered payroll fraud involving officials who allegedly registered relatives as ghost workers and collected multiple salaries. ICPC Chairman Musa Aliyu said one suspect allegedly placed 14 family members on a government payroll, while another reportedly received salaries through records created for his wife, children and other relatives. The commission said some fictitious staff entries appeared legitimate, with names and email addresses, but were linked to bank accounts belonging to different people. Aliyu said the ICPC identified about 900 suspected ghost workers after a year-long investigation and gave those named an opportunity to prove they were genuine employees. He added that ghost-worker schemes could also lead to fraudulent pension, mortgage, housing-fund and health-insurance payments. The commission said it recovered more than ₦24 billion linked to suspected ghost-worker pension funds in 2024 and is increasing its use of data, technology and inter-agency cooperation to prevent payroll fraud.
