UK and Nigeria Agree on Faster Returns for Illegal Migrants
The UK and Nigerian governments have reached a new agreement to streamline the return of migrants without legal status in the UK. Under the deal, UK letters will now be accepted by Nigeria as valid identification documents for deportation. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Nigeria’s Interior Minister Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo agreed to remove the need for emergency travel documents from Nigeria. The deal builds on recent UK immigration reforms aimed at securing borders and deterring illegal migration. The partnership also includes joint operations to share intelligence on criminal gangs, a standardised document-checking system, and tougher penalties for immigration offences. It aims to protect vulnerable women and children and support legitimate business and investment between both countries.
