Scientists Name Endangered Peruvian Plant After Lionel Messi
Scientists have named a newly discovered endangered plant species Salvia messii in honour of Lionel Messi. The plant was documented in Peru’s Andes and has light blue and white flowers, colours associated with Argentina’s national team. The mint-family plant grows on rocky mountain slopes at elevations of about 2,000 to 2,400 metres. Researchers say its habitat is limited and threatened by climate change and forest fires. The species was described by researchers from Peru and Argentina in the scientific journal Phytotaxa. Its name follows botanical convention for species named after a person.
