Fuel Costs Deepen Hardship in Delta’s Riverine Communities
Fuel subsidy removal has hit Delta’s riverine communities especially hard because travel, trade and access to essential services depend largely on boats. Residents say fares on key water routes have risen sharply, making movement between communities and Warri increasingly difficult. The rising cost of petrol and diesel has also hurt fishermen. Many now spend heavily on fuel before going to sea, while the value of their catch often fails to cover operating costs. This has reduced fishing activity and increased pressure on households that depend on the coastal economy. Delta State should consider subsidised public ferry services, coastal fuel depots and soft loans for fishing cooperatives. Modern boats, outboard engines, cold-storage facilities and alternative-fuel options could reduce transport costs and help revive economic activity in the riverine areas.
