Sanwo-Olu: Affordable Homes Need Roads, Water, Power and Tenant Protection
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says solving the housing shortage requires more than constructing new buildings. He said homes must also be affordable, accessible, secure and supported by essential services such as roads, drainage, electricity and water. The state says it has delivered 10,623 homes through public funding and public-private partnerships since 2019, completing 23 housing estates across Lagos. Another five schemes are under construction and are expected to add 1,584 homes. Sanwo-Olu said the government is expanding Rent-to-Own and Lagos HOMS schemes, while pursuing tenancy reforms to curb arbitrary rent increases and illegal charges. Speakers at the World Habitat Day event also called for better access to land and housing finance, noting that high rent and transport costs make it difficult for many working families to save for home ownership.
