Mbappé Apologises to France Fans After Fourth-Place World Cup Finish

Mbappé Apologises to France Fans After Fourth-Place World Cup Finish — 1 of 2
1 / 2

France captain Kylian Mbappé has apologised to supporters after Les Bleus finished fourth at the 2026 World Cup in North America. France lost 2-0 to Spain in the semi-finals before suffering a 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff. Mbappé said the team’s failure to win a trophy would hurt for a long time. In an open letter published in French regional newspapers, the Real Madrid forward thanked fans who stayed awake through the time difference and travelled to support the team. He said France’s World Cup journey was shared by millions of supporters, not only the players on the pitch.

Do fans see Mbappé's apology as enough, or will the fourth-place finish overshadow everything France achieved?

What exactly should fans judge the apology against: the result itself or the team's overall effort?

Finishing fourth is painful for a captain, especially after losing both the semi-final and the third-place playoff.

An apology is respectful, but one player should not carry the blame for a tournament outcome involving the whole squad.

France should review why they conceded six against England, then use the disappointment to strengthen their next campaign.
