Kaduna Project Returns Out-of-School Children to Learning as 187,719 Remain Affected
Kaduna State’s out-of-school children mapping for 2025/2026 identified 187,719 children aged six to 17 who are not in class. More than 60 per cent had never enrolled, while poverty, child labour, distance, insecurity and early marriage were among the barriers keeping them out of school. The Reaching Out-of-School Children project is using catch-up classes, accelerated basic education, Tsangaya learning support and radio lessons to bring children back into education. The programme has enrolled 15,000 children in its first year and has 20,000 more participating in Catch Up Clubs. The intervention also provides uniforms and learning materials, monitors attendance and works with parents, traditional leaders and religious leaders when children are at risk of dropping out. Kaduna plans to use the mapping data to guide education planning, while the project targets 100,000 children for enrolment over four years. For children who once worked on the streets, farms or in markets, returning to class offers a chance to build literacy, stay in school and pursue a different future.
