Lagos Island Residents Protest Blackout as Heat Warning Raises Concern
Residents of Lewis, Okesuna, Beecroft, Simpson and Sandgrouse streets on Lagos Island protested electricity outages on November 3. They chanted in Yoruba, “E fun wa ina o, orun pa wa,” meaning “Give us light, the heat is killing us.” The number of protesters was not immediately known. The protest followed a Lagos State Government warning about possible extreme heat as the dry season approaches. The state advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and wear light clothing. The area is served by Excel Electricity, which had not publicly responded to the protest at the time of reporting. Power supply has also been strained elsewhere in Lagos amid reduced electricity allocation and generation shortfalls.
