Fuel Price Hike Deepens Transport Burden for Nigerians With Disabilities

Rising petrol prices have pushed transport fares to between ₦1,400 and ₦1,450 per litre in parts of Abuja and other major cities. While the increase affects commuters generally, persons with disabilities say they face heavier costs because cheaper alternatives are often unavailable to them. A wheelchair user may have to pay for extra space for a mobility aid. A visually impaired commuter may need to cover the fare of an accompanying aide. Others cannot reduce costs by walking short distances, taking crowded buses or using inaccessible transport options. Advocates say the situation exposes the need for accessible public transport and targeted interventions for persons with disabilities. Higher fares could further limit access to work, school, healthcare, markets and public services.
