Nasarawa Police Detain Two Officers Over Alleged ₦150,000 Extortion of Travellers
Two officers attached to the Ado Area Command in Nasarawa have been detained while police investigate allegations that they framed a traveller and demanded ₦150,000 from him. The Police Complaint Response Unit said the officers were identified after a video of an altercation with two travellers went viral. The travellers were reportedly returning from a wedding and heading to the airport for a flight to Lagos. According to the account shared in the video, officers stopped the travellers for a search, took one man to an isolated location and later brought him to the station. His friend allegedly said a divisional police officer demanded ₦100,000 to secure his release, plus ₦50,000 for fuel. The officers allegedly claimed they found cannabis on the man and wrote a statement implicating him after he refused to do so himself. The Complaint Response Unit said the team leader, Inspector Sani Mikailu, reportedly died two days before the scheduled interview, so only two officers appeared. They have been detained pending the investigation and further instructions from the Inspector-General of Police.
