Israel Says Troops Will Only Leave Lebanon After Hezbollah Is Disarmed

Israel announced on June 25 that it will not withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is disarmed and demilitarised. This declaration came amid US-mediated talks in Washington, where both sides have met directly since April. The Israeli military has carried out airstrikes and deployed troops in the country’s south after Hezbollah entered the Gaza conflict in March. A government spokesperson stressed that protecting northern communities remains Israel’s top priority. US officials indicate the two neighbours are nearing a commitment of intent.
