His Excellency, the Vice President of Nigeria is presently in imperial College, London at a United Nations (UN) high level event on energy transition in Africa agenda with a special focus on Nigeria. The VP is there championing the unique energy challenge of Africa against the backdrop of the move to achieve net zero emission. He addresses the gathering on the subject of just and equitable energy transition. He recalls that this is the second time the FGN has collaborated with the Imperial College, the first time being with Prof Leslie Drake from the Dept of Epidemiology on the Nigerian National School Feeding Programme which feeds over 10m schoolchildren. The energy challenge is a huge challenge and any energy transition has to be one that is fair and balanced. He notes that we are looking at two very different existential problems- how to move millions out of poverty and achieving net zero. The transition to net zero emissions is a serious challenge for developing countries. VP describes the premise for a just transition and explains that we cannot have a just transition, if we follow the programme as laid out by the wealthier countries. The VP and the HMS Environment went into a private session to review the Nigeria Energy Transition Plan and the Integrated Energy Plan. The International Energy Plan is advocating the least-cost approach to achieving Energy 100% electrification by 2030.
