Nigeria’s Development Does Not Have to Follow Europe’s Path

I do not think development is linear, and this may be one of the biggest mistakes in how we discuss Nigeria and Africa. We often compare ourselves with China, Europe or other wealthy countries without considering that their histories, institutions, wars, resources and relationships with global powers were very different from ours. There was never one starting line for every society. Geography, leadership, political stability, investment, culture and generations of decisions all shape a country’s progress. Colonialism and historical destruction matter, but they should not become excuses for refusing to examine our own choices and failures to invest consistently in development. Nigeria does not need to become Britain, and Africa does not need to repeat every stage Europe or Asia passed through. We can use existing knowledge and technology, adapt them to our environment, build industries, strengthen institutions, train people and solve local problems. The goal should not be merely to catch up with another civilisation. It should be to build ours from where we are today, using what humanity has learned and adding something new of our own.
