I wanted marriage and a stable family, but my first long-term relationship ended after my partner rejected marriage and admitted he wanted to see other people. Later, I began dating a neighbour who was open with me and generous to my family, even though I was worried about his drug use and lack of direction. The relationship became dangerous when he grew aggressive, slapped me during an argument and repeatedly returned to substance use. Despite my doubts, his proposal, my mother’s encouragement and pressure to settle down made me continue with wedding plans. Premarital counsellors warned me not to marry him, but I moved to Abeokuta to support his new business. There, his behaviour worsened, the business failed and he was arrested after a violent fight. I eventually left weeks before our planned wedding and am now rebuilding my life while learning not to ignore serious warning signs in relationships.
