THE alarm by Governor Seyi Makinde that bandits fleeing military bombardments in the North-West are seeking refuge in Oyo State is proof enough of the recurrence of their invasion of the South-West. In 2019, bandits and herders from the terror-impacted northern region infiltrated the South-West forests, villages, and towns. They constituted a huge security menace to the South-West but were soon repelled by the governors. Instead of the futile wait for the shorthanded centre, Makinde’s alarm should nudge the governors to collaborate again to repel the bandits.

Nigeria is a federal state, so the governors should strengthen state-level policing as it is in other federal countries.

At a New Year Thanksgiving service, Makinde said, “During a security briefing this morning, I learned that some bad elements from the North-West are relocating here due to military heat in their zones. During my birthday retreat in Fashola, bandits had camped less than two kilometres from where I was staying. This underscores the seriousness of the situation.” This is petrifying.

The earlier invasion of the forests, villages, and towns in the South-West by herders, unemployed youths and bandits prompted the then governors of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, and Oyo to establish the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun) in January 2020. The initiative was spearheaded by the Chairman of the South-West Governors’ Forum and the governor of Ondo, the late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Amotekun complements the efforts of the police and other security agencies to secure the region. As the first regional security outfit in the Fourth Republic, the Federal Government and northern hawks resisted it. The governors’ determination paved the way for its establishment.

Amotekun has since proved useful in delivering security to the South-West. It combed the region’s forests and towns to flush the bandits out and ensure the relative peace there.

In Osun, Amotekun has apprehended over 300 suspected kidnappers. In Oyo, human trafficking, ritual killings, kidnapping, and farmer-herder clashes have reduced. During the 2021 Yuletide, Ondo Amotekun arrested 600 suspected criminals and impounded over 550 vehicles. It had prosecuted 600 suspects in the state by mid-2024 and resolved over 500 herder-farmer cases.

The South-West is in danger again because banditry/terrorism in the North-West is unrelenting. The Institute for Security Studies in Dakar, Senegal, estimates there are about 30,000 bandits’ groups in North-West Nigeria “with the groups’ numbers ranging from 10 to over 1,000 fighters….”

While the NBS says in a recent report that the North-West had the highest incidence of reported crime with 14.4 million in the country, Zamfara disclosed in 2021 that bandits collected N970 million as ransom from victims’ families between 2011 and 2019.

The military recently relaunched relentless bombardments in the North, which prompted the bandits to flee.

Therefore, the South-West governors should reboot their security operations to overpower the assailants again. Governors can convene a security summit on this.

The Amotekun officers should be armed with sophisticated weapons and other modern devices. Additionally, the operations should employ technology. Drones should be deployed to police the forests in the zone to flush out the bandits.

The current high insecurity there should persuade the Federal Government to reconsider its decision to disallow Amotekun from carrying high-grade weapons. Indeed, there is no better time to establish state police than now.

Monitoring South-West forests should be a 24-hour business and not limited to challenging times. This calls for proper funding and recruitment of more competent hands for results.

The non-conventional and conventional security outfits – the police, military, DSS, immigration, Amotekun and vigilantes – should synergise and engage in collaborative intelligence gathering and operational activities for effective security delivery.

Security is the primary purpose of government. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum and its regional counterparts should organise security summits to brainstorm on delivering sustainable security to the people.

The thing was working well oo, until tragedy struck: within seven months, I was able to gather 40 containers and all were stuffed with money.

Only for me to return from work one evening and not find the containers again. I asked our last born and she said she had packed them and sold them to iron condemn people. The werey came back from school and started sweeping and rearranging the house that I didn't send her to rearrange. The Yoruba elders on the platform of “Yoruba Regional Alliance (YRA),” yesterday in Ibadan, issued a strong condemnation of the move, labelling it a direct threat to the harmony and cultural fabric of the southwest region.

The planned introduction of the Shari’ah Court, organised by the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria, has triggered alarm among Yoruba elders, who fear it could ignite chaos and disrupt the longstanding peace that has characterised Yorubaland.

Speaking during press a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, the leader of the group, Com. Opeoluwa Akinola stated that the planned introduction could incite unrest and conflict in Oyo State.

He noted that “This is an insidious move to disrupt the progress and pace of development that Oyo State is experiencing,” urging for the initiative’s total cancellation.
“The Yoruba people have a long-standing tradition of religious tolerance, coexisting peacefully with diverse faiths, including Christianity, Islam, and traditional Yoruba beliefs.”

The elders stressed that the rich cultural heritage of Yorubaland has been maintained for generations, and they viewed the introduction of a Shari’ah court as a grave threat to the balance. Citing historical context, the YRA reminded the public of past attempts to impose Shari’ah law in Yorubaland, which have been met with resistance.

“For decades, Muslims from the north have sought to export a brand of Islam that promotes violence and intolerance,” they declared. The elders argue that this does not reflect the values of the Yoruba people.”

The alliance also referenced the historical defeat of the Fulani jihad at Osogbo in 1840, where a coalition of Yoruba forces successfully resisted a significant upheaval. “Had this conflict turned in favour of the Fulani, our Obas would have been replaced by Emirs,” they warned, underscoring the importance of this historical event in shaping Yoruba identity.

The YRA spoke not just for a few but represented a collective voice of the Yoruba people who are united against what they perceived as an external imposition of ideologies that threaten their way of life. “We cannot allow our land to become a battleground for agendas that do not align with our values,” the group emphasised.

YRA, however, called for swift action from local leaders, urging them to prioritise the preservation of peace and social harmony. “The mantra of ‘To bury the Quran and the Jihad sword in the sea’ must be a guiding principle for our leaders,” they insisted.

The group affirmed their readiness to defend Yoruba ancestral land against any form of destabilization, including efforts to impose Sharia law. Their statement followed reports that the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (Oyo State Chapter) plans to inaugurate a Sharia court in Oyo town on January 11, 2025. The event is slated to take place at the Muslim Community Islamic Centre, Oba Adeyemi High School Road, Mobolaje area, Agbogangan, Oyo.

The statement declared: “We will resist any move to impose Sharia law or courts in Yorubaland. Yoruba culture and traditions are distinct, and any attempt to introduce alien laws will be met with fierce opposition. Describing the proposal as “laughable,” the group vowed to mobilize resistance if the plan moves forward.

“We warn the Nigerian government not to create divisions in Yorubaland. Our focus is on Yoruba Nation self-determination, and we will not allow any external influence to derail our struggle.”

Quoting Yoruba leader Chief Obafemi Awolowo, they reiterated their resolve: “Instead of a Yorubaman prostrating for a Hausa-Fulani, it is better to take courage and die.”

The youths demanded the immediate withdrawal of the plans and called on Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, South-West governors, Yoruba monarchs, senators, and other leaders to reject the proposal and safeguard Yoruba cultural heritage.

They emphasized that Sharia law is incompatible with Yoruba values, culture, and way of life. “We will not allow any attempt to disrupt the peace of Yorubaland under the guise of religious imposition.”

Expressing concern about potential destabilization and the rise of extremist activities, the group stated: “We reject any effort to entrench practices that undermine our faith, values, and identity. We will resist this agenda with all our might.”

The Yoruba Nation Youths also reaffirmed their commitment to establishing an independent Yoruba Nation, free from oppression. “No force on earth or in hell can stop the rise of a sovereign Yoruba state.” They urged Yoruba citizens to remain vigilant and ready to defend their land from any external influence or imposition.

It was gathered that Akeem, who is a popular poultry farmer in Agbele area of Ikorodu, Lagos state took to his heels after the incident.

Akeem, also known as Akeem Aladie (Akeem who rare hens) is a residence of no 19, Alhaji Lawal Animashaun street, Agbele in Ikorodu Central Local Government area of Lagos state.

The father of three is a farmer who rare chickens and pigs in the area, where he also resides, and also plant some vegetables within the area.

It was learnt that on Thursday July 4th, 2023, Akeem had set trap for the herdsmen, who usually destroy his farmland with their cows.

Sometimes in May, we learnt that Akeem went to a nearby Police station to report that two herdsmen destroyed his farmland with their cows, and he could not do anything.

The Police, according to a source did not act on the information, reason he started looking for another alternative to deal with those herdsmen.

Akeem also went to the community leaders in the area, those who are aware on what is happening in the area for long.

Our reporter learnt that Akeem had reported on two occasions to the Police, and no steps taken so far.

It was gathered that on Thursday, the herdsmen came with not less than 27-cows to graze in the area, including Akeem's farmland around 10:25pm.

A community member who had sighted them rushed to inform Akeem, who later went with his brother to confront them.

At the seen, their argument later turned to violence were they injured Akeem and his brother. Akeem's leg was broken during the fight and the herdsmen too were seriously wounded.

Akeem, it was learnt that he beat them to stupor, inflicting injury on them before taking to his heels.

The Edo State Police Command said it has transferred the case of the arrested 31-year-old, housewife identified as Abigail Oluwarotimi, who allegedly inflicted injuries on the private part of a primary school pupil, to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID.

DAILY POST reports that the Commissioner of Police, Umoru Ozigi disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen by the Command’s spokesman, Moses Yamu.

The statement said the case was transferred to the SCID for a thorough and discreet investigation.

Umoru explained that the Command received a report on January 11, 2025, at 7:45 pm, that Abigail Oluwarotimi heated a metal object in fire and used it to inflict burns on her house help by name Jude Joseph, aged 15 years.

He said the action of the housewife resulted in the victim sustaining injuries on his lap and genitals.

“The suspect was promptly arrested. She confessed to the crime and blamed her actions on the allegation that the boy molested her children. The victim is currently receiving treatment.

“The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Umoru Ozigi, was concerned about the development and he ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and discreet investigation.

“The Command, therefore, warned the general public against taking laws into their hands, while emphasizing the importance of allowing the law take its course,” the statement said.

A retired civil war veteran, Colonel Nasiru Salami, has criticized the Nigerian Army’s treatment of retired personnel, citing it as a reason he would never encourage his children to join the military.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief program during the 2025 Armed Forces’ Remembrance Day on Wednesday, the 76-year-old veteran shared his journey, struggles, and disillusionment with the system.

Colonel Salami enlisted in the Nigerian Army in October 1967 and was deployed to the Biafra war just six weeks after training. He served on the front lines for 11 months between 1967 and 1970, losing his right foot during the conflict. Despite the injury, he returned to battle, demonstrating unwavering dedication.

Now serving as the Secretary of the Nigerian Legion in Lagos, Salami revealed that his decades of service have been overshadowed by unfulfilled promises and neglect.

“I cannot recommend that any of my children join the Nigerian Army,” he declared. “They see me now, and my life isn’t what they expected. They want me to be happier and more fulfilled. How can I encourage them to join the same army?”

Salami, a father of two graduates, advised his children against enlisting in the army, suggesting alternative careers in the Navy or Air Force, which he believes offer better treatment.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has announced the completion of regulatory oversight transfers to four states.

The states are; Enugu, Ekiti, Ondo, and Imo, making them fully responsible for managing their electricity markets.

The commission disclosed this on its X handle on Monday, stating that the transfer of regulatory oversight began on January 10, 2025, with 10 states slated to receive full control over their electricity sectors.

According to NERC, while the process is ongoing for six states, the transition has been successfully completed in Enugu, Ekiti, Ondo, and Imo. “As of January 10, 2025, NERC has commenced the transfer of regulatory oversight to 10 states.

Once the transfers are complete, the states will be responsible for regulating their electricity markets,” the statement read. The affected states include Enugu, Ekiti, Ondo, Imo, Oyo, Edo, Kogi, Lagos, Ogun, and Niger.

This development stems from the enactment of the 2023 Electricity Act, which has significantly reshaped the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, ending the centralized regulatory structure in place since 2013. However, this transition also impacts the pre-existing market structures of electricity distribution companies.

The adjustment has begun in Enugu, Benin, and Ibadan DisCos, while the other six states will incorporate sub-companies by 2025 to align with the new framework.

NERC noted that the restructuring will provide states with more control over their electricity markets, enhancing efficiency and service delivery in line with constitutional provisions.
