> Four drug kingpins identified as Ogbuji Christian Ifeanyi; Iloduba Augustine Chinonye; Shuaibu Nuhu Isa (a.k.a Don) and Zidon Zurga, have been convicted and sentenced to a total of 95 years in prison by the Federal High Court in Lagos and Yola, Adamawa State over trafficking of cocaine and skunk worth over N4.6 billion.

A statement released by NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, on Friday, March 7, says Ogbuji was intercepted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja, Lagos, on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, during an inward clearance of Ethiopian Airlines flight passengers from Addis Ababa to Lagos, for importing 817 wraps of cocaine weighing 19.40 kilograms with an estimated street value of Four Billion Six Hundred and Fifty-Six Million Naira (N4,656,000,000.00).

Babafemi mentioned that Ogbuji's arrest was barely 16 months after the 48-year-old businessman was arrested and convicted for ingesting 93 pellets of cocaine. 

‘’He was first arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, upon arrival from Uganda via Addis Ababa, onboard Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 951 for ingesting 93 pellets of cocaine with a gross weight of 1.986kg. He was subsequently arraigned before Federal High Court 12 Abuja presided over by Hon. Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon in charge no: FHC/ABJ/CR/192/2023 and convicted on July 13, 2023. Ogbuji was sentenced to two years imprisonment with an option of paying a fine of Three Million Naira (N3,000,000.00), which he paid and was set free.

Not done with crime, Ogbuji was again arrested at the Lagos Airport with the large consignment of cocaine on September 18, 2024, after which he was arraigned before Justice Yellim Bogoro of the Federal High Court Lagos in charge number: FHC/L/845C on January 16, 2025. He was eventually sentenced on February 28 to five years imprisonment on count one with an option of seven million naira fine and 10 years imprisonment on count two without an option of fine. In the event that he failed to pay the N7million fine, the judge ruled that the convict will serve a total of 15 years in jail consecutively. The court ordered the forfeiture of monetary exhibits and other items found on him at the time of his arrest.''

Babafemi stated that in his own case, 51-year-old Iludoba was arrested by NDLEA operatives on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2021, at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, for cocaine trafficking. 

‘’He was found to have ingested 58 wraps of the illicit drug, 48 of which he excreted on transit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia while he expelled the balance of 10 in NDLEA custody after his arrest on January 1, 2022. He was thereafter arraigned on two counts in charge number FHC/EN/CR/18/2022 before Justice Folashade Giwa Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court, Enugu.

After three years of diligent prosecution, Iludoba was convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment on each count, bringing his total years in jail to 10 years, which will run concurrently from the date of his conviction, Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

Babafemi said in the case of Shuaibu Nuhu Isa (a.k.a Don), 55, and Zidon Zurga, 50, they were arrested by NDLEA operatives on November 25, 2024, along Numan-Yola Road with 500.800kg skunk, a strain of cannabis, concealed in a pilot Toyota Hilux vehicle marked Lagos NT 829 AAA and a Prado SUV with a fake presidency number plate 01B-266 FG.

They were later arraigned before Justice Bala Usman in charge number: FHC/YL/150 /2024 and convicted on February 7, 2025, to 35 years imprisonment each on two counts, bringing the combined years in jail for both of them to 70 years or pay a fine of N25 million each. The court also ordered the interim forfeiture of the two jeeps used in trafficking the illicit drug consignment.

Reacting to the conviction of the quartet, chairman/chief executive officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the trial courts, the teams of officers who investigated and prosecuted the three cases at the MMIA Strategic Command in Lagos, Akanu Ibiam International Airport Special Area Command, Enugu and the Adamawa State Command for their diligence and professionalism. He said “the conviction and the forfeiture of the convicts’ instruments of crime will further strengthen the deterrent effect of our ongoing effort to totally dismantle every drug network in the country.”

Former Nigerian education minister, Oby Ezekwesili, has accused the Senators of desecrating the Nigerian Senate.

She expressed her views in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, criticising the Senate for failing to investigate the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Instead, she said, the Senate chose "the ignoble path of vicious abuse of power and desecration of our public institution."

"When men, because of little power fleetingly acquired, start speaking like they are God, we all must remember what history reveals of their kind," she wrote.

Addressing Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan directly, Ezekwesili added: "Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, you have inspired a generation. You have inspired all credible citizens. You will never walk alone." 

She also called on the Senate to investigate the allegations against its President.

“Investigate the accusation of sexual harassment — that is all that sensible Nigerians have collectively asked the @NGRSenate to do. But no, they have decided to choose the ignoble path of vicious abuse of power and desecration of our public institution,” she wrote. 

The controversy follows the Nigerian Senate’s decision to suspend Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, with the suspension taking effect from March 6, 2025.

Earlier, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had declined to appear before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions on Wednesday. 

The committee, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen, presented a report signed by all 14 members, recommending that Akpoti-Uduaghan be barred from the National Assembly and prohibited from representing herself as a senator during the suspension period.

The suspension has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, with many expressing differing views on the issue.

Instead, she said, the Senate chose "the ignoble path of vicious abuse of power and desecration of our public institution."

An internal auditor of American International School in Abuja told the Federal High Court in Abuja that former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, paid his children’s school fees up until graduation in dollars

Bello is being prosecuted by the EFCC, which has accused him of paying $760,000 in advance for his children’s school fees shortly before leaving office.

The witness, Nicholas Ojehomon, revealed this to the court on Thursday.

Ojehomon told the court that he did not know Yahya Bello personally at the time but was aware that he was a parent who had enrolled four of his children in the school.

He identified the former governor’s children who were enrolled in the school as Zayan Bello, Zara Bello, Farid Bello, Na’ima Bello, and Nana Fatima Bello.

He told the court that the former governor paid $90,074 for Farid Bello, $87,470 for Zara Bello, $26,241 for Na’ima Bello, and $18,707 for Nana Bello.

“Mr Ali Bello contacted the American International School, Abuja, on Friday, August 13, requesting to pay the Bello children’s school fees until they graduate. The school management accepted his offer,” said Ojehomon.

He tendered the agreement for prepaid tuition fees to the court, which, upon examination, confirmed that Ali Bello, Yahaya Bello’s cousin, had contacted the school in 2021 to pay the children’s fees in advance until their graduation.

The prosecution counsel, Kemi Pinheiro SAN, also tendered some documents, including email correspondences between Ali Bello, Yahaya Bello’s cousin, and the school, statements of account from TD Bank USA and the American International School, certified copies of the AISA admission letters to the defendant’s children, a contractual agreement for prepaid tuition until graduation and teller copies of payments to the court.

The court has admitted these documents as exhibits.

The school requested a valid account number from the EFCC to refund the fees. The refund is to be made in a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) account.

In a nutshell,the suspension of Dist Sen Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghen is in contravention of the two principles of natural justice which posits *Audi Auterem patem* meaning (Hear from other party) as enshrined in section 36 of the 1999 constitution as amended 2011, and *Nemo judex incausa Sua* meaning (One can't be a judge in his own case).

Furthermore assuming without conceeding the fact that the said suspension lacks Merrit,but assuming the senate committee is genuine and has the power to recommend a suspension for erring member,the pertinent question is does the senate has the constitutional power to suspend a member for a period of six months as seen in the case of Sen Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghen? The answer is in negative,because the position of the law as enshrined in section *21 of the Legislative Houses (powers & privileges) Act* ,a senator can't be suspended beyond 14days.

Conclusively,Sen Akpabio by virtue of being a party or respondent to the petition lacks the power to preside over such petition because same is in contravention of the second arm of the natural justice principle (Nemo judex incausa Sua) supra.

Sequel to the above argument I hereby affirm that the six months suspension is illegal and shall hold no water because you can't place something on nothing and expect same to stand *Ex-nihilo Nihil Fit* as such I demand that it be lifted with immediate effect with apology.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Prof. Sunday Samuel, has approved clemency for final-year students whose examinations were canceled on January 29, 2025. 

The cancellation followed a wave of wild jubilation on campus, which the university described as a gross violation of its directives.

AAU’s Spokesman, Otunba Mike Aladenika, disclosed the decision on Thursday. 

The university management had accused the graduating students of engaging in disruptive activities, including a car parade, blaring sirens, spraying money, shouting, and blocking access roads within the campus. 

AAU’s Acting Registrar, Ephraim Isiroaje, explained that the punitive measure was initially intended as a deterrent to other graduating students yet to complete their exams.

He also noted that the affected students, primarily from the Faculty of Arts—Departments of Mass Communication, English, and History and International Studies—ignored prior memos prohibiting such celebrations on campus.

He said: “The university’s management, at an emergency meeting, resolved to invoke the extant laws on wild jubilation/celebration, thereby cancelling all the final-year examinations written on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, including, but not limited to, the following: ELS 41I, MAC 414 and IIIS 416.

“The management shall decide in due course when such canceled examinations shall be rescheduled.”

Don't get me wrong, as someone who's had to deal with depression and anxiety most of his life, I still find it hard to stomach the fact that I could lose my loved ones. However, I have learned to accept death as a natural part of life. 

Wait... I'm not a motivational speaker but here's what I found unfortunate: a lot of us are stuck in a particular embarrassing state because we feel and believe we could make a difference tomorrow. It could be a bad habit, addiction, etc. We tell ourselves that it's okay to drown in indiscipline, I can always fix things up. There's enough time. Sadly, this is what we keep telling ourselves until we wake up one day with nothing but mountains of regrets. 

The more you keep feeding your mind with that nonsense, the more you lose that zeal needed to make yourself the change you need. Listen, you would end up searching tirelessly for what is within you. To appreciate life, you must learn to accept mortality — not as a curse, but as a blessing. To achieve self-discipline, you have to start seeing today as your last day on earth—I mean literally. As you do so, ask yourself if that bad habit, addiction (or whatever your struggles are) is what you want to spend the rest of life in. 

Mortality gives us purpose. It enables us to get our priorities straight or spend the rest of few years we have left in regrets. What's that thing you find difficult to do in your life? Go ahead and do it right now. Let death be a reminder to live a better life, to transform your dreams into reality, and become that version you always admire.

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has blacklisted 14 examination centres in Ogun and Oyo states for their involvement in malpractice across nine subjects.

NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, announced this on Friday at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State, while releasing the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (External) results.

He stated that 10 centres in Ogun and four in Oyo were sanctioned for whole-centre malpractice.

Wushishi further disclosed that the names of the blacklisted centres and supervisors would be forwarded to other examination bodies for additional penalties.

“The number of candidates booked for various forms of malpractice is 6,169, compared to 8,518 in 2023, representing a 27.7 per cent decrease,” he stated.

Additionally, seven supervisors—two from Oyo, two from Ogun, and one each from Lagos, Cross River, and Ebonyi—were recommended for blacklisting due to poor supervision, lateness, and aiding malpractice.

“The Federal Ministry of Education has mandated that the names of these centres and supervisors involved in malpractice be sent to sister examination bodies, including JAMB and WAEC,” Wushishi added.

Regarding the 2024 examination statistics, Wushishi revealed that 86,067 candidates, comprising 44,988 males and 41,079 females, registered for the examination while 84,799, including 44,277 males and 40,522 females, sat for the exams.

“62,929 candidates, representing 75.62 per cent, sat for English Language and scored credit and above, while 77,988 candidates, representing 93.94 per cent, obtained five credits and above in Mathematics.

“The number of candidates who secured five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics, is 57,114, representing 63.35 per cent.

“Meanwhile, 70,711 candidates, representing 83.39 per cent, obtained five credits and above, irrespective of English Language and Mathematics,” Wushishi added.

Speaking at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) stakeholders' meeting held in Port Harcourt, the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, represented by the Amanyanabo of Oproama, HRH Barr. (Surv.) Tubotamuno Asifamabia Dick-Jaw III (OPOLOBIA IV), commended RSIEC for its timely efforts in organizing the elections. He emphasized that the commission's actions demonstrate a commitment to the people of Rivers State, who are eagerly anticipating a fully functional local government system.

The traditional ruler further revealed that the council, comprising all traditional leaders in the state, has given its full blessings to the electoral process. He stated that should funds fail to be allocated for the elections, the traditional rulers would organize a fundraising initiative to finance the exercise, ensuring that democracy at the grassroots level is not stalled.

The stakeholders' meeting, which brought together party chairmen, RSIEC officials, civil society groups and other critical stakeholders, also featured a reaffirmation of commitment from the Chairman of RSIEC, Hon. Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Rtd). He assured that the commission remains steadfast in conducting a credible, free, and fair LGA election come August 9, 2025.

The declaration by the traditional rulers signals a strong resolve to uphold democratic principles in Rivers State, even in the face of financial and political uncertainties.

Rivers: Traditional Rulers Vow To Sponsor Lga Elections If Federal Allocation Fa

What could be better described as a tragedy occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, following the collapse of the popular Ụrasị River bridge at Umunuko Ukpor in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Located along a federal road, the collapsed bridge, which had spanned beyond 40 years, is said to be a significant gateway to Imo State, Okija, Orsumoghu, and other many other Anambra South community through Ukpor.

The collapse of the bridge, which reportedly occurred at about 6:50AM on Wednesday, came while a truck fully loaded with chippings was crossing through it, as it was overwhelmed by the weight of the truck and its contents, leading to its breakdown and the fall of the truck.

This was corroborated by a video currently trending on social media, showing the truck and the chippings right inside the Ụrasị River, while the occupants of the vehicle were seen struggling to come out safe, together with people who rushed to help rescue them.

The incident not only rendered the bridge impassable for any kind of vehicle, but also made it a deathtrap for pedestrians who would now exercise high level of caution to be able to cross through it.

According to a voiceover that accompanies the video, there had been several efforts to restrict heavy duty vehicles from using the bridge, which all proved abortive, as unknown persons would always go at night and dismantle any barricade mounted there to prevent the heavy duty vehicles from using the weak bridge.

Attempts by this reporter to speak with the Nnewi South Local Government Chairman, Hon. Van George Ezeogidi, on the incident, proved abortive, as he was yet to respond to his call as at the time of filing this report.

On his own part, when contacted, the President General of Ukpor Improvement Union, Chief Ikenna Mbazulike Amaechi, who confirmed the collapse, assured to furnish the reporter with more details about the unfortunate incident and the bridge.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Local Government Chairman on Community Affairs and Homeland, Chief IG Nwawulu, also confirmed the incident and further revealed that there was no casualty.

While revealing that the bridge was constructed during the tenure of former Governor Jim Nwobodo; Chief Nwawulu, who is also the immediate-past President General of Ukpor Improvement Union also confirmed to this reporter that the community leadership had made several attempts to prevent heavy duty vehicles from using the bridge to prevent its collapse, all to no avail, as unidentified persons usually dismantled the barricaded mounted by the community.

He also highlighted some other steps and interventional efforts so far made since after the incident to salvage the situation.

On his own part, when contacted by this reporter, the Anambra State Commissioner for Works, Engr. Ifeanyi Okoma, said the Ministry had been notified of the incident and would deploy a special team to the scene on Thursday for on-the-spot assessment and further actions. 

Efforts by this reporter to speak with the officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, on the incident proved abortive, as the Spokesperson refused to pick her calls or call back.
