Yoruba Ijala Poet and Actor Chief Alabi Ogundepo Dies at 84

The Yoruba literary and cultural community is mourning Chief Alabi Ogundepo, the traditional poet, Ijala chanter and actor, who died on Monday, August 24, aged 84. Born in Saki, Oyo State, Ogundepo was widely respected for his mastery of Ijala, the traditional hunters’ poetry. Through his performances and writings, he helped preserve Yoruba language, history and oral traditions for younger generations. His family described him as a remarkable literary voice whose work reflected Yoruba culture, tradition and the human experience. Funeral arrangements will be announced later as the family requests privacy and prayers.
