Did the Ark Carry God’s Glory from Israel to Ethiopia?
The medieval Ethiopian epic Kebra Nagast, or “Glory of the Kings,” tells how the Queen of Sheba, known as Makeda, visited Solomon and gave birth to their son, Menelik I. In the account, Menelik later returned to Ethiopia with the Ark of the Covenant, and Solomon dreamed that the sun had left Israel to shine on Ethiopia. The story presents this as a sign that God’s glory had moved there with the Ark. The Kebra Nagast took its known form in the 14th century and is not part of the Bible. Historians generally view it as a legendary text that helped legitimise Ethiopia’s Solomonic dynasty. Some supporters connect the tradition to biblical passages including Psalm 68:31 and Zephaniah 3:10. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church regards the Ark as sacred and holds that it rests in the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Axum.
