When I hear “vanity upon vanity,” King Solomon is the first person who comes to mind. He was known for wisdom, immense wealth, many wives and concubines, yet he still wrote deeply about the emptiness of worldly pleasure. I sometimes wonder whether his teachings in Proverbs and Ecclesiastes were compressed lessons from his own experiences. His warnings about pleasure, women, wealth and excess may have come from someone who had seen it all. We may not know the exact cause of his death. Still, biblical terms such as “infirmity” could have covered illnesses that were not clearly named in that era. Plenty enjoyment can also come with consequences, and Solomon’s writings may reflect that reality.
