RIRS to Fully Digitise Tax System, End Multiple Taxation in Rivers State
The Rivers State Internal Revenue Service (RIRS) has announced a full digitisation of its tax administration processes. This reform aims to boost efficiency, transparency, and ease of doing business in Rivers State. Announced by Executive Chairman Sir Israel O. Egbunefu at the 2026 RIRS Breakfast Meeting with BusinessDay, the plan focuses on institutional strengthening and a technology-driven tax framework. Key priorities include eliminating revenue leakages, harmonising procedures, simplifying compliance, and improving dispute resolution. Prof. John Ohaka of Rivers State University highlighted the new tax laws, effective January 1, 2026. He noted incentives and exemptions for Niger Delta businesses, plus digital payment and e-invoicing to reduce fraud and lower the overall tax burden. Held on March 19, 2026, at the Presidential Hotel in Port Harcourt, the event underscored RIRS’s commitment to a fair, predictable, and investor-friendly tax system.
