Buratai: Govt Knows Terror Financiers but Won’t Reveal Names
Former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.) says he cannot be blamed for the government’s decision to withhold the names of terrorism financiers. He told a national TV programme that security agencies are aware of those behind terror funding but have their reasons for not going public. Buratai stressed that the army did its part. He added that any action against suspects lies with other agencies. He also clarified that the government, not the army, directed the rehabilitation of repentant Boko Haram fighters in 2016. He lamented the worsening security in Nigeria and urged better intelligence gathering and more recruitment for the armed forces. His comments come amid reports that military authorities have held Brig. Gen. Gabriel Archibong since January over alleged links to retired Major Gen. Danjuma Ali-Keffi. Ali-Keffi, who once led the covert Operation Service Wide task force, has sued the army and top defence officials for unlawful arrest and other violations. He claims terrorism financiers were released under his watch and is seeking substantial damages in court.
