Socrates and the Courage to Question What We Think We Know

The Oracle at Delphi called Socrates the wisest man in Athens. Socrates tried to disprove it. He concluded that his wisdom lay in recognising the limits of his own knowledge. His approach was simple but unsettling: keep asking questions until the assumptions behind a belief become clear. It is a useful challenge when we defend views inherited from family, religion, community or social media without examining them. Socrates was sentenced to death in Athens for allegedly corrupting the youth. Rather than escape, he accepted the punishment and drank hemlock. His life leaves a lasting lesson: question your beliefs, stay curious, and do not mistake confidence for knowledge.
