Botany Graduate Says Three Years of Job Hunting Pushed Her to Learn Shoemaking and Baking
A 23-year-old Botany graduate says she has spent about three years searching for work since leaving university, without success. She believes the limited demand for her field and Nigeria’s difficult job market have left many graduates struggling to begin their careers. She said her university training was largely theoretical and did not equip her with enough practical skills for available jobs, including roles in industries where plant science could be relevant. The experience has left her questioning the value of her degree and affected her emotionally. To survive, she learned shoemaking, baking and fashion designing. However, she said the high cost of equipment and start-up capital has made it hard to turn those skills into a stable business.
