UBA Wins African Banker Technology Award for AI-Driven Cross-Border Banking

UBA Wins African Banker Technology Award for AI-Driven Cross-Border Banking

United Bank for Africa has been named Africa’s top digital bank at the 2026 Banker Technology Awards. The award highlights UBA’s use of AI, digital payments and tech innovations to streamline services. Central to this win is UBA’s chatbot, Leo, integrated with the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System. Leo enables customers to carry out cross-border transfers in local currencies through a simple chat interface, reducing delays and cutting costs. The bank’s digital chief said the future of African banking will hinge on technology, connectivity and customer trust rather than brick-and-mortar branches. Alongside the award, UBA rolled out an upgraded RedApp platform to deliver faster, more user-friendly mobile banking across its African network.

How do you think UBA's AI chatbot Leo will change customer expectations for cross-border banking services across Africa?

Absolutely. Leo's AI-driven support should raise the bar for faster, more personalized cross-border transactions and real-time assistance.

It's impressive that UBA won for digital innovation, but awards often reward buzz more than real improvements customers feel.

I no too sure say Leo alone fit solve cross-border challenges; real forex processes and compliance weigh heavier than flashy chatbots.

Banks should pilot small AI modules like chatbots before full rollout, monitoring transaction success rates and customer feedback closely.
