Edo Governor Grants ₦1 Million Each to 41 Returnees Evacuated from South Africa

Edo Governor Grants ₦1 Million Each to 41 Returnees Evacuated from South Africa

Governor Monday Okpebholo has pledged ₦1 million to each of the 41 Edo indigenes evacuated from South Africa after recent xenophobic attacks. He made the announcement at the Festival Hall in Government House, Benin City. The funds will help the returnees secure accommodation and rebuild their lives. The state government will also offer soft loans to support business startups and full reintegration. Okpebholo ordered that the cash be released within 24 hours to prevent anyone from being stranded. Spokesman for the returnees, Riches Unubun, thanked the Edo and federal governments for the evacuation and asked for assistance with voter registration so they can participate in upcoming elections.

Sure, that one million could really help cover rent, buy tools or seed a small trade for steady income.

Granting funds sounds positive, but I wonder if one million naira truly covers housing and resettlement costs in Benin City.

Providing cash is fine, but shouldn't there also be plans for long-term job training or community support programs?

A simple first step could be partnering with local landlords to secure affordable housing before distributing the funds to returnees.
