First Recorded Human Case of Shamonda Virus Reported in France as Patient Dies
French health authorities have reported the first known human infection with the insect-borne Shamonda virus. The patient, who was severely immunocompromised, died in early October after developing neurological complications. Officials said there is no known wider public-health threat at this stage. Investigations suggest the patient may have been bitten by a Culicoides midge in eastern France, where the virus circulated among animals during spring and summer. Shamonda virus mainly affects cattle and is spread by biting midges. It was first identified in Nigeria in the 1960s and has since been detected in parts of Africa, Asia and, more recently, Europe. Health, animal and environmental authorities are continuing their investigations.
