Awoniyi Replaces Injured Osimhen for Super Eagles’ AFCON Qualifiers

Taiwo Awoniyi has been called up to replace Victor Osimhen in the Super Eagles squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. Osimhen remains sidelined as his recovery from a right adductor muscle strain has taken longer than expected. He also missed Galatasaray’s league match against Trabzonspor, which had been viewed as a key test of his fitness. Awoniyi returns to the national team with 10 appearances and two goals for Nigeria. The Coventry City striker was part of the Super Eagles squad at the 2021 AFCON, where he scored against Sudan in the group stage.
