Nigeria Repatriates Chinese Fugitive Accused of Trafficking 12 Tonnes of Pangolin Scales
The Nigeria Police Force has arrested and repatriated Cai Jinlian, a 42-year-old Chinese national wanted over the alleged trafficking of endangered wildlife. INTERPOL NCB Abuja arrested him in Abuja on July 18 after intelligence indicated that he had been living and moving between Delta and Plateau states since about 2023. He was returned to Shanghai on July 29 under bilateral police cooperation arrangements. Chinese authorities allege that Jinlian masterminded the shipment of about 12 tonnes of tree pangolin scales from Nigeria to China in two consignments between November 2018 and April 2019. Two alleged accomplices were convicted in China in 2020 and received prison sentences of more than 14 years. Police said the operation reflects ongoing efforts to disrupt wildlife trafficking and other cross-border crimes.
