Oyo Governor Urges UN Probe of Ogbomoso School Abduction

Oyo Governor Urges UN Probe of Ogbomoso School Abduction

Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, has called on the UN and international human rights bodies to investigate the May 15 abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire LGA. He expressed relief at the safe release of most victims and mourned those who died during the ordeal and rescue efforts. He paid tribute to teachers Joel Adesiyan, Deacon John Olaleye and Michael Oyedokun, as well as security personnel, hunters and Amotekun operatives who lost their lives. He also prayed for injured survivor Bamidele Paul and thanked residents for their patience and support. Makinde warned that criminal groups remain a threat and urged citizens to stay vigilant. He encouraged prompt reporting of suspicious movements via the state’s toll-free emergency line. To prevent future incidents, the government will tighten surveillance around routes linking communities to Old Oyo National Park, improve community intelligence and deepen collaboration with security agencies. The governor stressed the need for a transparent account of the abduction and called for an independent international inquiry to ensure accountability.

Relying on international investigators seems misplaced when local law enforcement agencies remain under-resourced and often delayed in response.

Absolutely—our local squad deserves a chance. Let's pump them up before calling in reinforcements!

I'm not convinced an external probe shifts anything until our own security forces are properly funded and held accountable.

Local government should invest in secure transport for students, conduct regular safety drills, and collaborate with parents ahead of any formal inquiry.
