Alabi Isama: I Witnessed Gowon and Ojukwu Sign the Aburi Accord

Retired Brigadier Alabi Isama says he witnessed the January 1967 Aburi meeting in Ghana, where General Yakubu Gowon and Eastern Region military governor Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu reached an agreement aimed at preventing civil war. According to Isama, disagreements emerged after both leaders returned to Nigeria. He argues that Gowon should have met Ojukwu again to resolve the disputed terms. He adds that a proposed meeting in Benin City did not hold because Ojukwu was concerned about his safety. The Aburi Accord proposed greater regional autonomy over internal security, governance and resources. Its collapse was followed by the creation of 12 states, Biafra's declaration of independence and the Nigerian Civil War. Isama's account renews debate over whether the war could have been avoided if the agreement had been implemented.
