Report Alleges FIFA Ignored Congo Player Eligibility Issue Raised by Nigeria
Internal documents reviewed by an international newspaper reportedly show that FIFA officials found concerns over DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi’s eligibility before the World Cup qualifiers. Nigeria had complained after losing to DR Congo. The report says FIFA considered options including awarding the match to Nigeria or replacing DR Congo in the playoff, but dismissed Nigeria’s case on procedural grounds. DR Congo went on to defeat Jamaica and qualify for the World Cup. Former NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau said FIFA did not disclose its eligibility finding to Nigeria and called for an investigation. FIFA said its judicial bodies act independently and that its president played no role in the decision.
