Private School Fees Rise by Up to 40% as Nigerian Parents Face Higher Back-to-School Costs
Parents are facing steeper back-to-school expenses as many private schools reportedly raise tuition by 30% to 40%. Higher petrol prices are also pushing up the cost of school runs, buses, uniforms and supplies. In Lagos, one school in Ipaja reportedly raised its termly fee from ₦86,000 to ₦124,000, while another in Egbeda increased fees from ₦250,000 to ₦320,000. Some schools are considering higher transport charges, and one school in Alagbado has stopped its bus service. Private school owners blame unpaid fees, teacher salaries, rent, taxes and maintenance costs. Parent representatives have appealed for increases to be limited to 20%, while the Federal Ministry of Education has confirmed that Federal Unity Colleges will resume on September 14, 2026, as scheduled.
