Israeli Study Tests $60 Blood Test That Detected Stage 2–4 Lung Cancer With 93% Accuracy
Researchers at Tel Aviv University have developed a low-cost blood test that detected stage 2–4 lung cancer with 93% accuracy in an early study of 103 participants. The test also correctly ruled out cancer in 90% of healthy participants. Instead of costly DNA sequencing, the method uses fluorescent light to identify cancer-related chemical changes in DNA fragments found in the bloodstream. A specially designed chip reads these patterns and may also distinguish between major lung cancer subtypes. The test is still under evaluation and has not yet been proven for stage 1 lung cancer, where early diagnosis offers the best chance of cure. A larger trial involving hospitals in Israel and Europe is expected to run until mid-2027.
