Civil Servants Give Tinubu September 30 Deadline to Cut Fuel Price, Approve Wage Award
Civil servants under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council have asked President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the worsening cost-of-living crisis affecting workers and their families. The council wants petrol prices reduced to ₦500 per litre, an immediate wage award, and a review of salaries and allowances for federal, state and local government workers. It also called for subsidised transport, affordable housing and periodic pay adjustments linked to inflation. Workers said petrol now sells for as much as ₦1,430 per litre in some areas, driving up transport, food, housing, healthcare and education costs. They gave the Federal Government until September 30, 2026, to respond and requested early negotiations for a new national minimum wage expected to take effect in January 2027. The council proposed a ₦500,000 monthly minimum salary for Grade Level 01, Step 1 workers under the 2027 wage structure and urged the government to use local refining, naira crude sales and an oil-sector intervention fund to lower fuel costs.
