Nigeria Ranks 4th Most Terrorised Country Globally in 2025
The Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2026 report, released on March 19 by the Institute for Economics and Peace, places Nigeria as the fourth most terror-affected country in 2025. It ranks behind Pakistan, Burkina Faso, and Niger but ahead of Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan. According to the GTI, nearly 70% of global terror deaths occurred in just five countries: Pakistan, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Niger, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nigeria saw a 46% rise in terrorism fatalities, with 750 deaths—a 13% increase over 2024. ISWAP and Boko Haram accounted for over 80% of those deaths. Five Sahel nations recorded drops in incidents and deaths last year. Nigeria stands out as the only country in the region with rises in both categories. The report also notes a surge in ideological and criminal violence, which prompted US-backed strikes against ISWAP in late 2025. Nigeria has featured on the GTI every year since 2011. Civilians remain the primary target of these attacks, underscoring the urgent need for stronger security measures.
