Nigeria Must Stop Treating Government Funding as a Fix for Sports
Nigeria’s repeated football failures show that public spending alone is not building a sustainable sports system. The country needs functioning grassroots programmes, well-maintained facilities, credible leagues and clear accountability from football administrators. Government should focus on infrastructure, school sports, regulation and transparent seed funding rather than continually paying for the routine operations of professional football. Questions around intervention funds and federation finances make independent oversight essential. Sports federations and prospective NFF leaders should publish practical commercialisation plans covering sponsorship, broadcasting, merchandising, match-day income and audited accounts. With stable rules and credible institutions, private investment can help Nigerian sports grow beyond dependence on government support.
