Why Some Nigerians Still Support Tinubu Despite Rising Living Costs

Despite the cost-of-living crisis, President Bola Tinubu still has supporters who believe his economic reforms need more time to produce results. They argue that he inherited deep structural problems and that subsidy removal and foreign-exchange reforms, though painful, were necessary to stabilise the economy. Supporters point to easing headline inflation, stronger foreign reserves, investment interest and reform efforts in the oil, tax, power and financial sectors. However, many households still face high food, transport, housing and energy costs. A lower inflation rate means prices may be rising more slowly; it does not necessarily mean essentials have become affordable. Political loyalty, regional and party interests, and doubts about opposition alternatives also shape support for the President. Ahead of 2027, the key test will be whether promised macroeconomic gains translate into better purchasing power, jobs, security and living conditions for ordinary Nigerians.
