University of Chicago Bans AI, Laptops and Phones in Some Undergraduate Classes

The University of Chicago will prohibit generative AI, laptops, phones and wearables in its core social science courses for undergraduates from the fall term. Students will be expected to read printed materials and complete coursework independently. The policy is intended to help them develop reading, writing and critical-thinking skills without relying on AI. Students with disabilities will still receive reasonable accommodations. The rule applies to undergraduate courses only and does not cover graduate programmes.
