Osun Poll: APC, Accord Claim 18 Members Killed as Security Fears Rise

Tensions are rising in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election, as the APC and Accord Party claim that a combined 18 supporters have been killed during the campaign period. The allegations have raised fears for voters, party members and election officials. Violent incidents reported during the campaign include attacks on supporters and convoys, shootings and alleged assassination attempts. In May, Accord Party member Kolade Eluyera was killed in Irewole Local Government Area. The party blamed suspected APC supporters, while the APC rejected the allegation. On June 3, the Accord chairman in Osogbo Local Government, Asimiyu Ajibola, was shot by gunmen and hospitalised. The planned deployment of 15,000 police officers has also sparked debate. The APC campaign council said the number of personnel matters less than their professionalism, equipment and ability to protect lives and ensure a free and credible election. It alleged that 10 of its members had been killed in several communities across the state.
