VDM vs Arome Osayi: Did Pre-Christian African Societies Have Their Own Spiritual and Scientific Systems?
I believe African societies had organised trade, production and spiritual traditions long before Christianity arrived. In the South-South and the ancient Benin Kingdom, trade in goods such as spices, palm products and textiles suggests that local economies had systems that supported production and exchange. I also believe indigenous knowledge systems deserve serious study. For example, some people link the Odu Ifa corpus to complex methods of recording and interpreting information. Our ancestors were spiritual, but spirituality should not be reduced only to performing miracles. My view is that the message of Jesus about the Kingdom of God differs from much of what many modern churches emphasise. Spirituality should also involve wisdom, purpose and having dominion over one’s world.
