NAFDAC Finds Methanol in Herbal Drinks Linked to 48 Deaths in Ondo
NAFDAC says preliminary tests found high concentrations of methanol in locally prepared alcoholic and herbal drinks linked to an outbreak in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State. The agency said 48 deaths and 182 critical illnesses had been recorded as of September 17, 2026. The outbreak affected communities including New Town, Odole, Okele, Orita Odigbo, Araromi-Obu and Oniparaga. Many victims reportedly suffered headaches, body pain, breathing difficulties, loss of consciousness and visual problems. Five people were reported blind, while two others had partial blindness. NAFDAC said tests on 15 unlabelled samples also detected cannabis indica. Six samples caused about 50 per cent mortality during acute toxicity tests in laboratory mice. The agency said 15 people had been arrested over the suspected production, sale and distribution of the drinks, while confirmatory laboratory tests continue.
