Can Nigeria Move Beyond Tribal Politics and Ethnic Labels?

I believe Nigeria’s ethnic politics is one of the biggest obstacles to national unity. Our identities have always been more complex than the broad labels of Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani, Efik or Edo. Migration, trade, intermarriage and language shifts have connected communities for centuries. Before colonial rule, many people identified strongly with their lineage, town, kingdom, village or region. Colonial administration later reinforced wider ethnic categories for governance. That history should make us question the habit of treating ethnic identity as fixed, separate and more important than citizenship. I think wider access to ancestry DNA testing could spark useful conversations about our mixed backgrounds. However, DNA results cannot neatly assign anyone to a modern ethnic group. The real solution is to reject ethnic prejudice, judge leaders by competence and build a Nigeria where every citizen has equal rights and opportunities.
