Mushin LGA Drives Intensive Drainage Desilting to Curb Flood Risks

Mushin LGA Drives Intensive Drainage Desilting to Curb Flood Risks

Local councils across Lagos State have stepped up drainage maintenance and desilting exercises to reduce flooding and keep communities cleaner. Mushin Local Government chairman Tunbosun Aruwe led inspections of major highways and inner roads, emphasizing the removal of concrete slabs and the clearing of blocked tertiary channels along Igun/Gbadamosi Street in Itire. Working with an accredited service provider, the exercise aims to restore free stormwater flow, lower flood risk and promote a healthier environment. Residents are urged to dispose of waste responsibly and avoid dumping into drains. Recent heavy rains have flooded areas such as Oshodi, Ilupeju Road and parts of Surulere, highlighting the need for coordinated sanitation efforts.

How can local residents help sustain these drainage efforts beyond the council's inspections?

It's encouraging they're cleaning highways, yet focusing mainly on inner roads might not stop serious flooding in low-lying areas.

Desilting alone won't solve flood risks if councils ignore bigger infrastructure needs and rely on short-term fixes.
