Four Nigerians Who Set New Athletics Records in 2026
Nigeria’s track and field athletes delivered a remarkable 2026 season, with Kanyinsola Ajayi, Samuel Ogazi, Jami Schlueter and Chinecherem Nnamdi setting new national benchmarks across sprinting, the 400m, decathlon and javelin. Ajayi ran 6.45 seconds in the indoor 60m on 26 February to set a Nigerian record, then clocked 9.84 seconds in the 100m at the NCAA East Preliminaries on 30 May. His 100m time surpassed the long-standing Nigerian record of 9.85 seconds. Ogazi set indoor Nigerian and African 400m records with 44.57 seconds in March before winning the NCAA outdoor title in 43.38 seconds in June. Schlueter became the first Nigerian representative to exceed 8,000 points in the decathlon, scoring 8,024, while Nnamdi improved his Nigerian javelin record with an 84.68m throw in April.
