May Yul-Edochie Sues Ex-Lawyer and Yinka Theisen Over Years of Online Defamation

May Yul-Edochie Sues Ex-Lawyer and Yinka Theisen Over Years of Online Defamation

May Yul-Edochie has filed a lawsuit at the Lagos State High Court against her former lawyer, Emeka Ugwuonye, and Yinka Omolola Theisen, along with several anonymous social media users. She accuses them of cyberbullying, defamation, and online harassment spanning multiple years. In a 126-paragraph affidavit, May claims the defendants published false accusations, manipulated images, insulting caricatures, AI-generated content, and explicit death wishes to damage her reputation. She is asking the court to order deletion of the offending accounts and compel platforms to reveal the identities of the anonymous posters. The suit also alleges her former lawyer breached attorney-client privilege by disclosing confidential information online. Justice Abdul-Raheem Tejumade Muyideen has directed that all court processes be served across known contact channels. The case is adjourned pending service reports.

It's interesting that a celebrity would sue a former lawyer and a social media user for defamation, suggesting these disputes are escalating.

In my view, dragging years-old comments into court might be overkill and risk chilling honest online criticism.

Anyone facing online defamation should document every offensive post and consult a lawyer before it escalates further.
