Asked directly about the speculation before Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup match against Atletico San Luis, Messi replied: “No.” Thiago, 13, joined Inter Miami’s academy in 2023 and is expected to continue his development in the United States. Messi has previously described him as a thoughtful midfielder who enjoys organising play rather than leading the attack. The rumours drew attention because Thiago is close to the age Messi was when he moved from Argentina to Barcelona’s famed youth academy. Messi remains La Masia’s most celebrated graduate after winning four Champions League titles and 10 La Liga titles with Barcelona.
