Ogun Warns of Heavy Rainfall, Flood Risk in Vulnerable Communities
The Ogun State Government has issued a fresh flood alert as the second phase of the 2026 rainy season begins in September. Residents in flood-prone communities have been advised to stay vigilant and relocate to safer places where necessary. The warning follows a forecast of intense rainfall, estimated at about 360mm in September. Authorities said prolonged rainfall, possible overflow from Oyan Dam and tidal fluctuations could cause river and coastal flooding, especially around wetlands and floodplains. Communities listed as vulnerable include Isheri, Arepo, Mawere, Magboro, Akute, Warewa and parts of Abeokuta. Others include Makun-Omi, Iwopin, Oni, Ifaara, Igele, Ebute-Imobi, Tungeji Island, Agosasa, and settlements along the Ilo and Iju rivers. Fish farmers operating around floodplains and river corridors, including those in Eriwe, Yemule, Ilase and Ayegbami, have also been urged to harvest their stock early. Local authorities, emergency responders and community leaders are expected to intensify awareness and flood-response efforts.
