Calabar Court Sends Four to Jail for Running Unregistered Pharmacies
A Federal High Court in Calabar has sentenced four individuals to eight and a half years’ imprisonment for operating unregistered pharmacy premises and dispensing medicines illegally. Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu found the defendants guilty on five counts related to running a pharmacy without registration and using unlicensed staff. They were acquitted on three counts about unsealing premises after regulatory closure, as evidence showed NSCDC officers authorised the reopening. The court highlighted the critical role of pharmacy regulations in safeguarding public health. The absent defendants must now serve their sentences or each pay an N11 million fine.
