Jacob, Rachel and the Cost of Love: Is Time Really Money?
Jacob fled from his brother and travelled to Haran, where he met Rachel, Laban’s younger daughter. He loved her and agreed to work for seven years in exchange for marrying her, as told in Genesis 29. Scripture says the years felt like only a few days because of his love for Rachel. But this raises a question: while Jacob worked for seven years, what role did Rachel play in helping to prepare for their future? When the time came, Laban deceived Jacob and gave him Leah instead. To marry Rachel as well, Jacob had to serve Laban for another seven years. Jacob’s story is a reminder that love, commitment and time can come with a heavy cost.
