The Prodigal Son: A Warning Against Self-Righteousness
Luke 15:11–32 is not only about a rebellious younger son. It also reveals the older son’s hidden distance from his father. One son ran away openly, while the other remained at home but allowed resentment, comparison and self-righteousness to harden his heart. The parable reminds us that repentance begins with humility, and that God’s grace comes before our performance. The father welcomed the returning son before he could earn anything, while also going out to plead with the angry older brother. God’s mercy reaches both those who have wandered openly and those who quietly believe their good works have earned them special treatment. Quiet faithfulness matters, but obedience without love can become bitterness. Another person’s restoration does not reduce our own inheritance in God. We are called to drop resentment, stop keeping score, and rejoice when broken people find their way home. Whether we identify with the younger son’s rebellion or the older son’s pride, Christ invites us to come home. His grace is for the ashamed, the weary and the self-righteous who are ready to receive the Father’s love.
